MIAMI VALLEY -- We hear reports about crime everyday, but never think it could happen to us. However, what if you became one of the unlucky ones? Would you be prepared to protect yourself against a firearm or a knife? If you carry your cell phone with you or a pen, you're already one step ahead in protecting yourself in any situation.Just ask New York City native Vince Renda. He moved to Dayton 10 years ago.I've been here for 10 years and there have been 4 occasions where I actually had to use my firearm to save my life and the life of my daughter, he said. He was at a stop light when two people started punching his window. As he reached for my door and tried to open it, I deployed my fire arm and said please get away.Renda is trained in self defense and firearm safety. He is the co-owner of Family Tactical Training, a facility in Dayton he opened with his friend Brad Hamilton to teach people how to protect themselves.Ultimately you are responsible for your own safety, Hamilton said. Both men are dedicated to training people in self-defense. They understand that not everyone is comfortable carrying a firearm, so they showed our reporter Hilary Zalla some high tech personal security gadgets that can be life-changing assets. One of these devices is a cell phone case that is also a stun gun. It is made by Yellow Jacket and costs about $100. The stun gun is covered by plastic at the top of the case. At any moment, you can uncover it, flip an on-switch located on the side of the case, and deploy the stun gun on an attacker. One second of contact creates pain, two seconds creates muscle fatigue, and in 3 seconds the receiver will pass out.You already have your phone with you anyway, most of us carry it in our hands, it's bulky in our pockets, said Hamilton.Another great self defense weapon is the Olight Flashlight. It looks like a normal flashlight, but it can be deceiving. The flashlight can be used it to whack someone with or even better, it can make the receiver pass out. It can be used as a deterrent and that's by turning it on [and flashing it directly at a person] and that will actually blind someone. This will cause someone to pass out and get sick, demonstrated Renda. The Olight Flashlight starts at just $50.Finally, the Uzi Pen is a great self defense weapon. The pen can be used as a regular writing utensil, but it also has an extremely rough edge on one end. It's strong enough to go through the hood of a car or stab someone with. It is only about $20.Since it doubles as a real pen it's very handy, you can carry it with you, said Hamilton. The Yellow Jacket cell phone case, Olight Flashlight, and Uzi Pen are all non-lethal personal security gadgets. Remember, the cell phone case and pen are both contact weapons meaning you must come in contact with your attacker to use them. The flashlight is a non-contact weapon and can be used at a distance. If you are considering buying any of them, make sure you get the proper training first.Visit http://familytacticaltraining.com/ to sign up for self defense classes or to ask about any of the personal security gadgets mentioned in this story.
