Armine Avagyan, FAO, presents the characteristics of responsible peatlands management and why it is needed. 
 
Peatlands are one of the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitters in agriculture, despite their small global land surface area. Drained peatlands release considerable amounts of GHG. In this video, Avagyan outlines the consequences of drainage, including land loss, increased frequency of fires, increased loss of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and biodiversity loss. 

A principle of responsible peatlands management is that wet peatlands should be maintained wet, drained peatlands should be re-wetted, and where they cannot be rewetted, adaptive management should be undertaken.

This webinar was part of a learning event on challenges and solutions for responsible peatlands management organized by the MICCA programme at the Food and Agriculture Organization in September and October 2014.
