(23 Oct 2018) US National Security Advisor John Bolton said on Tuesday that he told Russian officials that the Kremlin had hurt itself by meddling in the US election. Wrapping up two days of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his top lieutenants, Bolton said he had told his Russian interlocutors that Moscow's meddling had been "particularly harmful for Russian-American relations without providing anything for them in return." Russia has staunchly denied any state-sponsored meddling, although Putin has suggested that some "patriotic" individual hackers could have been involved. During the briefing Bolton also said that Washington was convinced that Russia had violated a pivotal nuclear arms pact, citing it as the main reason for President Donald Trump's decision to dump it. He said the US had determined that Russia had been in violation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty since 2013. Bolton said the threat to Europe isn't the prospective US withdrawal from the pact but "the threat is the Russian missiles already deployed." Moscow has denied any violations. Asked if the pact could be rescued if Russia comes back to compliance, Bolton said it was hard to expect that, given Russian denials. Bolton also cited China's massive intermediate-range missile capability as another key concern.
