The elder statesman/woman of the English folk revival Norma Waterson and her partner Martin Carthy perform 'The Boston Burglar' at Birmingham Town Hall as part of the 'Gift' tour. Martin is brilliantly understated in this tour, he is of course, an early mentor to Bob Dylan mentioned as such on the sleeve notes of Dylan's second studio album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, released in May 1963 by Columbia Records. Here Martin sits in the background accompanying his partner Norma and daughter Eliza on their current tour, although he is a legend in his own right. Unlike either Bob Dylan or Paul Simon who Martin Carthy also took under his wing when he arrived in Britain during the early 1960s, he has never lost the authenticity of folk music, nor traded it for the lure of celebrity and the fabulous fortunes that have characterised the careers of some of his contempories. Here two great performers do what they know and love best in an intimate and accessible environment that remains firmly rooted in the communities from which they and their music sprang.
