Lawmakers Expected to Vote on Destiny's Law in May

DAYTON -- An update for you tonight on a young girl named Destiny, whose mother is fighting for a law in her name

Destiny turned nine this week, but we first introduced you to her when she was just a baby. That's when she was badly shaken at the hands of her mother's boyfriend, Terrance King. Doctors didn't think she would make it, but Destiny is a fighter.

King has nearly served his entire sentence of eight years.

Since then, Randi's been trying to toughen the penalty for abusers. Those who cause permanent harm to someone, would automatically serve another 5-10 years

Now Destiny and her mother's struggle will be put into words. Their story will be published in a book called "Losing Patience".

"I always go back through pictures from when it happened until now and I just can't believe she's made it so far because so many children die from those injuries, and not only die but they have lasting injuries like feeding tubes, being wheelchair bound and she's nothing like that," said Randi Shepherd, Destiny's mom.

As for Destiny's Law, prosecutors and judges are still finalizing details but it appears all stakeholders are just about in agreement. It's up for a vote sometime in May.
