Guitar tablature, or tab for short, is a way to indicate the fingering on a guitar. It is often use for reading popular styles of guitar playing because it is easier to understand in the beginning compared to standard musical notation.

Guitar tablature consists of six lines which represent the strings of the guitar. On the lines there are numbers which represent which fret to play the particular note.
Here's are some Pros and Cons compared to standard musical notation:
 
Pros:
 
Easier to use at first -- because the lines represent the six strings of the guitar it is easier at first to see exactly where your finger should be placed. Fairly obvious, even without a lot of instruction, how to understand tablature.

Clear fingering position -- tablature makes it easy to know where on the guitar neck the note is. Standard notation does not actually tell you where to play the note without additional hints. Because of this it's common for guitar players to have both standard notation and guitar tab.

Easy to write with standard type -- you can create guitar tab with a standard typewriter keyboard. Not so easy with standard notation.
 
Cons:
 
Pitches (actual notes) not indicated -- guitar tab does not tell you what the actual pitches.

Fingering not included -- you would need additional notation to know exactly what finger to use. There is no indication of fingering included.

No rhythm information -- the numbers only indicate where on the guitar fretboard to put your finger but not how long to hold the notes.
