(27 May 1974) Arriving on foot on Avenue de Marigny Giscard D'Estaing walked through cheering crowds to the entrance of Elysee Palace, where he was greeted by Premier MESSMER, then by the Acting President of the Republic ALAIN POBER. Besides Presidents of both Assemblies and many political and civilian personalities a classroom of 30 boys and girls from the suburb of Courbervcie were present. In the Elysee great Hall, Mr. ANDRE CHAMSON presented the 'Great necklace of the Order' to President GISCARD D'ESTAING. The President went around shaking hands with guests including the school boys and girls. Later the President went out on the steps pausing for photographers with the Acting President, ALAIN POBER, EDGAR FAURE, PIERRE MESSMER and other political personalities. He then passed a review of young soldiers from his former Regt. the 2nd Dragons. Amid the immense crowd on the Champs Elysee, President GISCARD D'ESTAING later had his car stopped at 'George V' Cross Road and walked up to Etoile, where took place the traditional ceremony of wreath laying on the Unknown Soldier's grave.
