Recorded at St George's Church Kidderminster on 30 June 2012, Shropshire based instrumental trio Whalebone bring some pagan imagery to this Christian site. The hare is an ancient symbol of fertility that was absorbed into Easter by the early Christians where is became the Easter Bunny. However the old English myth of the White Hare recaptures those pre-Christian origins with its references to witchcraft. It is a mark of diversity that these old symbols and earlier traditions are comfortable and well received in the church. The music Whalebone plays weaves many strands of past and present musical traditions. I see the band and their music as part of the wider English cultural revival which continues to grow through live music and other cultural events.
