The Fischbach Gallery is pleased to present Kansas City Project, an exhibition 
of 30 graphite and oil on paper drawings and one oil on panel painting of 
the physical environment of Kansas City, opening 13 February and continuing 
through 15 March 2014.  The Collection of 30 drawings was exhibited this 
past summer at The Kansas City Public Library.

My first knowledge of Kansas City came through jazz. Kansas City Style Jazz 
travelled up the Mississippi River from New Orleans.  Lester Young, Charlie 
Parker and Coleman Hawkins remain my favorite jazz artists.

The cityscape of Kansas City is filled with iconic architecture from the late 
19th century to present day. My visual survey highlights historical 
architecture but also depicts architectural oddities like the T.W.A. Building, 
Town Topic Hamburgers and The Strahm sign.  Incorporating the often 
overlooked completes my Kansas City Project.

Every building has a story. Union Station where Pretty Boy Floyd was shot 
down. The Drum Room where Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack performed. 
Country Club Plaza is the first mall in the US. The Stockyards with the double 
decker bridge.  My depiction of the solitude of 12th and Vine is in paradox 
to the energy that existed in the 1930s and 40s in that part of town.  The list 
is endless. My Kansas City Project celebrates and honors the vastness and 
diversity of the architecture. --Glen Hansen

Glen Hansen was born in 1961.  He earned a B.F.A. at the School of Visual 
Arts in 1985.  This is his eighth solo exhibition at the Fischbach Gallery.  His 
paintings are in numerous collections including The Metropolitan Museum of 
Art, New York.  He currently resides in New York City.
