"A Dancer Comments on Ambiguous Chads and Misplaced Mathematical Formulas" is a short spoken-word essay that choreographically combines carefully-crafted verbal language with gestural movement to offer a multi-layered meditation on teaching. The performance makes use of body metaphors and images drawn from dance to explore pedagogical ideas, while at the same time offering a visual counterpoint and reinforcement of those images and metaphors through choreographed movement. Lisa Ferrugia Atkinson is a dancer, writer and teacher based in Ann Arbor, MI. She holds a BA in creative writing from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Fine Arts in dance from The Ohio State University. Her professional background includes three years as an editorial and archival assistant at Carnegie Mellon, and five years as a company dancer for Laboratory Company Dance in Pittsburgh, PA. She is also an experienced grant writer for the arts. She currently teaches in the dance program at Eastern Michigan University, and her most recent published work appears in Volume 34 of Dance Chronicle. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
