Can science advance in an overly theocratic culture? Coughlan616 did a satire video where he pointed out that America was far and away the top producer of scientific papers and it beat China, an atheistic country, by a landslide:

Then he pointed out that America is a Christian country and denied that secularism was important. That is where he cheated the data. In America a huge percentage of the scientists are atheists. Our secularism is what allows us to have such an atheistic scientific culture within a Christian country. That level of secularism is what the theocratic states lack. Many have banned popular science books.

Sami Zaatari makes a bigger mistake and he, unlike Coughlan, was serious. He notes that there was an Islamic Golden age that was the most scientifically advanced of its time in spite of it being a theocracy. The first problem is, at that time, and since the dawn of recorded history, there never was a large secular state prior to that time and the Islamic state was the closest thing to it. Also, science has changed, its theories are more encompassing and today they encroach on traditional religious beliefs in a way they never did during that age. Sami himself fears the theory of evolution and is actually part of that problem.
