(4 Dec 2018) Ford Motor Company recently opened a tech-heavy facility in suburban Detroit in the hopes the new center will increase manufacturing efficiency and quality in the automaker's plants.
The $45 million Advanced Manufacturing Center opened over the summer in Redford Township, Michigan.
The company gave members of the media a look inside on Tuesday.
The center features 3D printing machines that make auto parts; augmented and virtual reality headsets capable of designing and simulating production lines; and collaborative robots that offer a safer way to install a vehicle part.
"The Advanced Manufacturing Center clearly is designed differently than most manufacturing facilities," said Michael Mikula (muh-KOOL'-uh), chief engineer of advanced manufacturing at Ford. "It's done on purpose to show the integration of engineering and technology with people. People are going to become increasingly important in our manufacturing operations as we deploy technologies."
According to Mikula, the ACM is 100,000 square feet and has roughly 100 employees.
