「Learn Japanese」 "to pretend to VERB, be NOUN, be ADJ" - VERB/NOUN/ADJ + ふりをする

The word 振り (ふり/furi), which translates to “pretense, show, appearance,” is used in the grammar pattern ふりをする (usually written in kana) following a Plain-Form VERB (Dictionary Form, Negative-ない Form, た-Form, etc.), a NOUN (followed by the particle の), or an ADJECTIVE (followed by the particle な if it is a な-Adjective) to mean “to pretend to VERB,” “to pretend to be NOUN,” and “to pretend to be ADJECTIVE” respectively.

Plain-Form VERB + ふりをする
NOUN + の + ふりをする
い-ADJECTIVE + ふりをする
な-ADJECTIVE + な + ふりをする

Example(s):
死んだふりをする
Shinda furi o suru
“to play dead”

聞かなかったふりをしてください。
Kikanakatta furi o shite kudasai.
“Please pretend you didn’t hear anything.”

今日彼は病気のふりをしている。
Kyou kare wa byouki no furi o shite iru.
“He is pretending to be sick today.”

彼女は恥ずかしそうなふりをした。
Kanojo wa hazukashi sou na furi o shita.
“She pretended to be shy.”
