Residents, police trade rocks and tear gas during evictions in Bolivia

Police were pummeled with rocks and stones this week as they tried to evict a group of people authorities say have been squatting on land on the outskirts of Cochabamba. The skirmishes ended with several police injured and several residents detained, local media reported. Police were reportedly called in to clear out a group of squatters near the Ciudad del Nino area on the northern edges of Cochabamba. Television footage from Red Uno showed residents throwing large rocks and stones from the top of a hillside down on police, some with shields, below. Police responded by firing tear gas before finally falling back. At least one police officer was taken away with injuries. Local media reported several others suffered minor injuries in the standoff.
