Watch live: Remembering George H.W. Bush http://bit.ly/2Uh1xmL Former President George H.W. Bush returned to Washington for the final time on Monday as the nation he had afforded a lifetime of public service prepared to say goodbye. A light breeze blew as the blue-and-white plane carrying the 41st president’s flag-draped coffin touched down at 3:22 p.m. Eastern Standard Time at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, just outside of Washington. Bush, who died Friday at age 94, was carried from Houston to Washington aboard the presidential plane that serves as Air Force One. The plane was designated as "Special Air Mission 41" in Bush’s honor. Members of Bush’s family, including former President George W. Bush, former first lady Laura Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, watched from the tarmac as Bush’s coffin was lifted from the plane amid a 21-gun salute and strains of “Hail to the Chief." A military band played “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” as the former president's remains were carried to a black hearse for the roughly 12-mile ride to the U.S. Capitol, where he will lie in state until Wednesday. A ceremony will mark the body's arrival at the Capitol. Vice President Mike Pence, House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell are all expected to deliver remarks. The public will be allowed to pay respects starting at 7:30 p.m.
