The worst drought Afghanistan in years has forced nearly a quarter-million people to give up their homes and move west to cities like Herat. Although, Herat is one of Afghanistan's more prosperous cities, it cannot provide work for the tens of thousands of new arrivals. The city's infrastructure is under increasing strain. International aid groups say that without urgent assistance, over 10 million people, which is more than a quarter of Afghanistan's population, could be classified as "food insecure" by next year.
