White House visitors pay tribute to H.W. Bush

(1 Dec 2018) Many of those who visited the White House on Saturday expressed admiration and condolences after the passing of George H.W. Bush. Michael Beer from Arlington, Virginia said, "President Bush was an honorable man and although I disagreed with many of his policies he was a decent man. And we mourn his passing today." In nearly a century of life George H.W. Bush would play so many prominent roles, from 20-year-old hero of World War II to the 41st president of the United States, that it would be difficult encapsulate all of them in describing the humble, unfailingly polite man who lived them. A Yale-educated college baseball star-turned Texas oil man-turned two-term congressman, Bush would also lead the CIA, serve as ambassador to the United Nations and China and carry out two terms as vice president before being elected president in 1988. As president, Bush, who died Friday at his Houston home at age 94, would see his popularity soar to almost unimaginable heights when he assembled a U.S.-led military coalition that liberated the oil-rich nation of Kuwait from its invading neighbor Iraq in a war that lasted just 100 hours. Only a year after that stunning victory, however, a deepening economic crisis at home would drive him from office when he lost his bid for a second term to then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton. Still, Bush would reinvent himself once more after what he called that humiliating defeat, going on to become a revered GOP elder statesman admired by both Republicans and Democrats alike and living to see his son George W. Bush elected the nation's 43rd president. As word of his death spread, tributes from around the world poured in. The elder Bush saw his popularity swell with the United States' success in the Gulf War in 1991, only to watch it evaporate in a brief but deep recession. The Republican was defeated in his bid for a second term by Democrat Bill Clinton. Bush had also been a World War II hero, Texas congressman, CIA director and Ronald Reagan's vice president. Only one other U.S. president, John Adams, had a son who also became president.
