(13 Nov 2018) China's foreign ministry on Tuesday claimed "Western countries" with "political motives" had attacked and slandered China during the United Nations' Human Rights review last week. "There were individual Western countries, who have political motives and ideological biases against China, attacked and slandered China in disregard of the facts" Hua Chunying said during a regular briefing. Some foreign officials and rights groups have criticized China's use of so-called "vocational training centers," which they say aim to strip the Uighurs of their religion and ethnic identity. During the UN review last week in Geneva, China characterized the far west region of Xinjiang as a former hotbed of extremism that has been stabilized through "training centers" which help people gain employable skills. China has rejected accusations that large numbers of ethnic Uighurs, Kazakhs and other Muslim minorities are being interned for the purpose of political indoctrination.
