La pratica del thru-hiking consiste nell'attraversare territori il più possibile selvaggi e incontaminati, camminando in totale autonomia per settimane, o anche mesi, per centinaia o migliaia di chilometri. Il thru-hiker impara a riconoscere il superfluo dovendo viaggiare leggero e affronta situazioni avventurose, adrenaliniche e spesso anche molto pericolose. In massima parte, comunque, nel thru-hiking si cammina. E camminando, in solitudine ed immersi nella natura, si ritrova se stessi. Robin è riuscito a ritrovare la strada della sua vita, dopo aver toccato il fondo, tracciando nuovi sentieri. Dopo anni passati in laboratorio come biologo molecolare, infatti, Robin diventa "The Walking Robin" e inizia una nuova carriera da esploratore e thru-hiker, cercando inoltre di fornire informazioni e competenze affinché altri si avvicinino a questa realtà.
