(28 Nov 2018) A Chinese scientist on Wednesday made his first public comments about his claim to have helped make the world's first gene-edited babies.
He Jiankui spoke at a conference on gene editing in Hong Kong, the first time he's discussed in public his largely secretive experiment that sparked international criticism.
He explained how he altered the DNA of twin girls when they were conceived to try to help them resist possible future infection with the AIDS virus.
He said the couples who took part in his study gave their full consent to the experiment and were fully aware what was being done with their genome.
He also said he provided the "funding, people, space or equipment".
