DAILY DOSE | The Israeli army's former Chief of Staff Benny Gantz is largely tipped for what could be a dramatic entry into the political world — despite recent setbacks with a cyber company he headed. Our Asher Westropp-Evans has the story.

Story:

The Israeli political establishment seems unable to create any real challenge to Benjamin Netanyahu. Therefore, there seems to be a constant search for someone coming from outside the world of politics — preferably with a strong military background. As elections are expected to take place in 2019, one name constantly comes up.

Benny Gantz was the I.D.F.'s 20th Chief of Staff. He joined the army in 1977 and volunteered to be a paratrooper. With time he ascended through various positions until he became the Chief of Staff in 2011. He was the army's top commander during two Gaza operations.

Israeli law demands a three-year cooling-off period for army officers before being allowed to enter the political world. During this period, Gantz was mostly involved with hi-tech and kept his personal opinions private.

Now that Gantz is eligible to run in future elections, his name is brought up time and again in different polls, giving him very flattering numbers. The latest poll published puts a future party under his leadership — a party which does not exist yet, in second place with 16 seats, only behind Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party with 28.

The aura of the former military commander is apparently what appeals the most to Israeli voters.
