A small piece for Quartet I composed in a bitterSweet mood. I had taken a train from *Paris* to Lyon. A Rabbi on the train approached me and said " Quel âge as-tu ( How old are you) I replied "assez vieux"( old enough) and ignored him. He then told me " count your blessings" I replied " "What do I do once I count them?" He seemed suddenly confused. I moved to another car on the train, where a woman in yellow fled, and he followed me, insistent on me recognizing him as a guide and wise man. I kept putting the Rabbi in his place. And so we continued for 2 hours, one man playing God, and one man simply wanting to be left alone.If you are told to count your blessings, you best also count your curses as well. if self awareness is the goal.
