Washington voters decide pivotal open House seat

(7 Nov 2018) Voters in one of three contested U.S. House seats in Washington dropped off their ballots on Election Day and their votes could help decide if the Democrats take the House or if Republicans keep it. The 8th Congressional District was designed to lean Republican but polls show the race between Republican Dino Rossi and Democrat Kim Schrier to be a toss-up. The seat was vacated when Republican Rep. Dave Reichert decided not to seek re-election. Rossi is a former state lawmaker and Schrier is a pediatrician and a first-time candidate. Democrats are mounting two other strong challenges in seats held by Republicans in Washington, but results might not be known for days or weeks due to the state's mail-in voting. Ballots have to be postmarked by election day, which can mean ballots in close races trickle in days after Election Day.
