This was a talk I gave at the APS New England Spring Meeting at Wheaton College, April 2, 2016. Real and complex numbers are not enough to do even classical physics in 3D space. One always uses a vector space over the real or complex numbers. In this video, I detail exactly what I mean by a number, then show how to build a number that is big enough to do physics in space-time. This leads to a hypothesis about a new invariant of Nature that could explain gravity to be like special relativity: an algebraic law instead of a field theory. http://bit.ly/vp-umft - the slides http://bit.ly/vp-qg - a site explaining quaternion gravity http://bit.ly/vp-q - the main quaternions.com site
