China says US should drop 'protectionist' approach

(18 Oct 2018) China's Commerce Ministry said on Thursday the US should "drop its protectionist approach" to trade between the two nations. Commerce Ministry spokesperson Gao Feng said Chinese companies are resilient to the impact of the ongoing trade spat with the United States. But he added that companies with weak competitive edge may be facing cost pressures and layoffs. Gao noted that China's exports to the United States rose during the first three quarters of 2018, indicating US companies may have frontloaded Chinese imports ahead of the implementation of tariffs. "It fully demonstrates that the economies of China and the US are highly complementary" Gao said. On trade ties between China and Japan, Gao said economic cooperation between the two nations is the "cornerstone and propeller" of bilateral relations, and a basis for "mutual political trust". Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will travel to China later this month for his first formal visit in seven years, in a further sign of improving relations between the regional rivals.
