3D printers have produced guns, space food, and even human body parts but the Telegraph's Harry Wallop had a more modest aim -- to create a vital missing piece of track for his son's train set. Although 3D printing has been widely used by design and manufacturing industries for many years the technology has only relatively recently been modified for a consumer market. The Telegraph's Harry Wallop decided to test out the capabilities of the pp3dp printer which has just been released for use at home and retails at £1,300.00. Harry's object of choice was the vital missing piece of a brio train track from his son's train set, he described the printing process saying: "Each layer is built up in a criss-cross pattern and then it starts all over again in an opposite criss-cross pattern and we're slowly building up this tiny piece of train track millimetre by millimetre." The PPDP 3D printer claims to provide an "easier printing experience" through automatic features such as automatic nozzle calibration height. The device melts ABS plastic to build 3D models layer by layer.
