Hope was nothing but a skeleton, unable to so much as free herself to go in search of food. Pennzie spent her 17 years on a chain, and when found by Missouri rescuers was covered in motor oil to 'keep flies away'. She was weak and starving. Both Hope and Pennzie, along with 88 more chained dogs between October 2012 and August 2013, received health care vet grants from Dogs Deserve Better's Hero Fund. These dogs suffer in myriad ways, both physically and mentally, but it's rare that they have ever been to a vet, ever received preventative shots, a health exam, or a spay/neuter. Dogs Deserve Better runs our own rescue program for chained dogs, but due to space limitations we cannot take in every chained dog who needs us. By extending health care grants to other groups and individuals who rescue dogs from the pain and suffering that is a chained dog's life, we are able to reach more dogs and provide not only physical help for the dogs but also relieve the stress that rescuers feel over finding money for vet care. We started the Hero Fund in October 2012 with $20,000, and were able to add another $10,000 to it from a second bequest and donations in early 2013. As of late August 2013, the grants have provided vet care to 90 dogs. Enough funding remains for only 10 dogs, and then the fund is depleted. Gone! BUT WE DON'T WANT TO STOP! This fund has been amazing, not only for the dogs and the rescuers who have received the funding, but for Dogs Deserve Better too, as we get to help so many more dogs than we were able to just last year. 100% of all funds raised through this grant go directly to vet care for the dogs. That's right, 100%. Dogs Deserve Better pays all overhead and administration costs, and any money you donate will go directly to vet care. There aren't many donation programs that can say that. Not only that, but we also pay all vets directly for the specific dog in the grant program, so there are no worries about funding being misplaced or diverted from its intended purpose. By donating to the Hero Fund fund today—in any amount—you get to feel as good as we do when we see the wonderful photos of the dogs we've helped. They are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face too. DDB provides monthly notes with photos and stories of every single dog who receives a grant on our Facebook page. Anytime you need a happy fix, just go there and read the most recent note and you too can feel uplifted and thrilled to know they are getting the much-needed care because of you. To ensure you can go there anytime to read the notes, follow us at http://www.facebook.com/dogsdeservebetter Will you contribute to the Hero Fund today? No amount is too large or two small. Even $5 or $10 goes a long way toward bringing a dog to safety and the loving arms of a new home and family.
