Today, Doncaster station was treated to a great reminder of what it was like in happier days gone by. "The Talisman" ran from London Kings Cross to Newcastle and back, with the northbound leg behind LNER Class A4 pacific 60009 "Union of South Africa" and the return leg behind Deltic diesel D9009 "Alycidon" - two great locomotives of days gone by.
The A4 was built in 1937 and the Deltic in 1961. They worked alongside each other in service for a number of years.
Both sequences were difficult for different reasons. The first location required hand holding of my heavy camcorder over the edge of a rather high building --- and the second sequence, of the Deltic, had to be shot while surrounded by young "jobs worths" employed by the railway and two members of the police who they'd dragged along. They were telling me what a danger I was to safety by attempting to use a tripod. The platform, of course, is full of other obstructions - signals, benches, luggage, children etc., but these are all much safer than my tripod. One of these "safety experts" was attempting to grab my tripod as the Deltic was approaching - I hate filming from station platforms!!
