he European Commission is to approve Polish state aid to the Gdansk shipyard, the cradle of the Solidarity trade union, under an improved restructuring plan assuring the yard's viability, the European Union competition commissioner said Tuesday.

"The new restructuring plan will restore long-term viability to the Gdansk shipyard," said E.U. Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes at a joint press conference with Polish Treasury Minister Aleksander Grad.

She said she hoped the commission, the E.U.'s executive arm, would be able to take "a positive decision" before the summer holidays after the last outstanding issues are satisfactorily addressed.
