Divers have proven that two massive caverns in the Yucatan Peninsula around the Gulf of Mexico are connected, making it the largest known flooded cave on Earth at 204 miles. Over the past 10 months, a diving team associated with the Gran Acuífero Maya project have been swimming through labyrinthine passageways, searching for links that connects two gigantic caverns: the 163-mile-long Sac Actun system and the 51-mile-long Dos Ojos system. Prior to this new discovery, the Ox Bel Ha system, located just south of Tulum, was ranked as the world’s largest at 167 miles.
