http://www.cincinnatichildrens.org Faculty Awards - Feb. 6, 2015 Entrepreneurial Achievement Award Hector Wong, MD Director, Division of Critical Care Medicine Professor of Pediatrics Hector Wong, MD, has served as director of the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s since 1998. He has seen first-hand the harm that results from one of the most devastating complications of severe infection in children: septic shock. Every year, more than 42,000 children in the U.S. develop severe sepsis, and nearly 4,000 die as a result. Wong and his colleagues developed a rapid diagnostic test, called PERSEVERE, that measures five biomarker proteins in blood to estimate the probable severity of sepsis and the child’s chances of survival. Results validating the test were reported in January 2014 in PLOS One. The test will be further developed through Persepsys Biomedical, a Cincinnati startup, and Cincinnati Children’s. In addition to his patient care and entrepreneurial research activities, Wong serves on the external advisory committee of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s Bench-to-Bassinet program and on the Clinical Laboratory Oversight committee at Cincinnati Children’s.
