Spain is grappling with one of the most serious political crises in its recent history following the disputed referendum on Catalonia’s independence and the violence that marred the attempts of Spanish national police officers to obstruct the voting process on October 1. The Spanish government and Supreme Court have declared the vote illegal, and Catalans have taken to the streets of Barcelona to condemn police violence, shutting down public transport and businesses. Barcelona has also witnessed rallies from protesters condemning the rich region’s attempt to break away from Spain and calling for unity.

The local and central governments have been at loggerheads, with no dialogue taking place following the controversial results of the referendum. What ramifications will the unilateral independence referendum have on Spain and Europe?
