We manage to take out the Destroyer pretty convincingly on the first expert attempt. Grab a nimbus rod and build a long platform that is ~70 blocks off the ground for this fight. Focus on attacking the destroyers spawns with your weapons and having your clouds deal damage to the boss. http://terraria.gamepedia.com/Nimbus_Rod
