Australia, despite its phenomenally unique biodiversity, is an extinction hotspot. We've caused more than 50 animal and 60 plant extinctions in the last 200 years. We have the highest mammal extinction rate of any country in the world, 30 since European colonisation, compared to just 1 in the US. In the last decade alone, we've lost two mammal and one reptile species, and plenty more are at risk with ongoing rates of land-clearing and habitat loss. Janne Torkkola, owner of Snake Out Brisbane Snake Removal & Wildlife Management Services, created the first podcast dedicated to Australian wildlife science and conservation. Janne is an experienced wildlife management business owner, a researcher, blog and essay writer, enthusiastic about Science Communication. Through the podcast Wildlife, Cake & Cocktails, Janne and special guests explore of the fascinating world of wildlife science. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
