It was the opening song on his 1982 album of the same name. The song details the true story of the spree killer Charles Starkweather, who along with his teenage girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate perpetrated an infamous killing spree in late 1957 and early 1958 beginning in their hometown of Lincoln, NE and stretching across the prairie to their eventual capture near Douglas, WY. Many of the details in the song, such as the first two lines, "I saw her standing on her front lawn / Just a twirling her baton", were depicted in the Terrence Malick film Badlands, a fictional story inspired by the events. The song does not adhere entirely to the Starkweather killings; for instance, Starkweather killed eleven people, while the song states that ten people died. The 11th victim not referred to in the song was most likely Starkweather's first, Robert Colvert, a gas station attendant murdered by Starkweather on December 1, 1957, almost 2 months before their killing spree began in earnest. Even if it is a sad song that talk about a evil man, I like the idea that "Love" can always survive... if you read the lyrics, the last thought of the killer has been for his lover.... Love will never die... even in the evil persons there is always a light of God surviving... Peace to you all Massy
