David Davis names the EU Countries That Worry They Will Suffer Without a Brexit Deal

While briefing the House of Commons from the despatch box the UK Brexit secretary, David Davis, named the countries that could be most at risk from a no-deal Brexit.

In a speech to Parliament the Brexit Secretary David Davis pointed out that there were some countries in the EU that would suffer far more from a no-deal Brexit than the UK ever would. And they needed to understand that, he said - which maybe is a riposte to Michel Barnier’s earlier educate the British on the repercussions of Brexit, jibe.

Despite the EU’s apparent intransigence, there are EU member states, said Mr Davis, that are keen to sort out a deal, among them being the North Sea littoral of the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Denmark.

When looking at EU/UK trade, you can see that the UK exported about £240 billion worth to other EU states in 2016.  But we imported some £310 billion at the same time. That gives the UK a trade deficit of £70 billion.

But this is not spread evenly across the other 27 EU states.

According to the Office for National Statistics Pink Book, our balance of trade deficit with Germany alone in 2015 stood at £25 billion, next came Spain with £10 billion, third Belgium with £8 billion, France was fourth with £5 billion and fifth Poland on about four and a half billion. Those few alone take the lion’s share of the deficit.

Now, that makes the UK an extremely good and loyal customer of not only the EU as a whole but, more importantly, of those few states particularly.

Now, in every other market place in the world, the customer is king and gets preferential treatment, like special prices and loyalty perks. The only thing that we get is a massive bill for the privilege of buying their stuff.

Now that doesn’t seem fair to me. Does it sound right to you? Can you imagine your local supermarket surviving long on that basis?

But from what David Davis said it may be that some of the EU members states and businesses are coming to realise this and will, hopefully, apply pressure on the EU Commission and negotiators to drop their silly notion that they must ‘punish’ the UK for leaving.

But I think we’re going to have to get nearer the 2019 deadline before that happens, don’t you?
