The collapse of the Berlin Wall came as the result of social, political and economic pressures that built up over decades behind the Iron Curtain. Its demise has exposed some glaring material differences in post-Communist societies. Social activists say governments cannot narrow those differences in the absence of civic values among ordinary citizens.
