(10 Dec 2018) Iraq's second largest city of Mosul on Monday celebrated the one-year anniversary of the defeat of Islamic State group with a military parade. The government declared victory last December after a gruelling three-year war in which tens of thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced. The government declared Monday a national holiday and celebrations took place countrywide. The battle for Mosul was Iraq's longest and most punishing conventional fight against IS in the more than three-year war against the extremists. IS forces captured Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, in a matter of days in the summer of 2014. These days, IS is still fighting to hold onto a small pocket of territory in Syria, near the Iraqi border.
