A white man alleged to have massacred nine black people after spending an hour with them during a bible study at a historic South Carolina African-American church was arrested on Thursday, a day after the killings took place. 

Following the killings a manhunt involving local and federal authorities ensued on Wednesday night, ending with the arrest of 21-year-old Dylan Roof 220 miles north of Charleston near Shelby, North Carolina.

He waived his right to extradition and was flown back to South Carolina following his capture. According to Reuters, Roof received a gun for his 21st birthday in April and his social media presence suggests a fascination with white supremacy. Roof is set to appear at a bail hearing on Friday via video link from the Charleston-area detention center. 

Wednesday's mass shooting at the African Methodist Episcopal Church saw six women and three men shot dead, including four pastors, one of which was Democratic state Senator Clementa Pinckney, 41. The victims were aged between 26 and 87.
