WH: Trump 'open' to making trade deal with China

(27 Nov 2018) White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Tuesday President Donald Trump is "open to making a deal" with China when he sits down this weekend for a dinner meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Speaking to reporters in the White House briefing room, Kudlow said the president "believes there is a good possibility a deal can be made and he is open to that." But he said "certain conditions have to be met with respect to fairness and reciprocity." And Kudlow said if that doesn't happen, the president is "perfectly happy to stand on his tariff policies." China's foreign ministry has said a recent phone conversation between Xi and Trump about trade and other issues was "extremely positive." Kudlow also reiterated Trump's comments Monday about General Motors' plans to close auto plants and cut thousands of jobs. Kudlow said there is "great disappointment" and "anger" about the announcement and said the White House is looking into options, including subsidies for electric cars. He said the White House aide added that he did not see a recession in the offing and did not rule out that the White House may take action against GM.
