This weeks "What's UP Wednesday?" --Call with Flora Peterson. We talked about rushing through life when we would benefit more from being fully present in the now.Flora shared this beautiful and powerful story that I feel guided to share with all of you!

There was a brand new monk and it was his first day at his monastery. He goes to the main elder monk to get his assignments for the year. He needed to carried water from the well and use that water to wash dishes and he also needed to chop wood. After a year of this he went to the monk for possibly a different assignment because he felt like his previous assignment took his entire day and the monk gives him the same assignment for another year. The monk felt a moan of frustration.

Another year goes by and he goes to the elder monk in hopes for a new assignment and he ends up getting the same tasks for another year. So the young monk gets frustrated and tells the monk that he cannot do the same thing for another year because he has no time to do anything else- let alone go to the Zen garden to meditate. So the elder monk tells him that he is going to do it his way at very slow, calm pace. The young monk feels like it will take all day but he does it the elder monk's way.

So the elder monk watches the young monk move very fast to gather water from the well. It took him 3 trips to fill 2 sinks of water. So the elder monk tells him to go so slow that not one drop of water spills out. The young monk tells the elder monk that he has been doing this for 2 years and that would take a really long time. But he tries it and he realized that each bucket filled 1 of the 2 sinks so it only took 1 trip to the well. He has been rushing so much that he was spilling all the water this entire time.

So when it came down to washing dishes the elder monk watched him waste time focusing on other things while he washed dishes. It normally takes him an hour or two to do. So the elder monk tells him to focus on the actually task, notice each plate as you wash and notice the soap as you scrub the dishes and be in the present moment. Allow for only washing dishes to enter your thoughts. So the young monk does this and realizes that he was all finished and it only took him less than an hour. He was so amazed!

Now it came time to chopped wood. The elder monk tells him how many chops does it take him to split the wood. The young monk says 3 chops. So the elder monk tells him to look at the wood and find the grain of it and it will only take him one chop. The young monk tells him that he has been doing this for 2 years and it takes 3 chops per wood. He does it anyways and he looks at the wood and sees the grain so he moves it slightly and aligns the axe with the grain and strikes the wood splitting it with one chop. Amazing!

He then realized that it was lunch time and he had time to eat knowing that all his tasks have been completed and has the rest of the day to do whatever he wanted. He learned that by being fully present in the moment allowed him to concentrate in completing the task and having the rest of the day to live and experience something else. The elder monk finished the day by saying: "If you need to carry water, carry the water! If you need to wash dishes, wash the dishes! If you need to chop wood, chop the wood!"

Think of how many times you have rushed through something and it took you 3-4 times more to accomplish. Think about how fast you could of actually finished if you where fully present in the task at hand and went at a more focused pace.

Be mindful of what you are doing! Do not let other tasks, worries, and wants to prolong what could only take a small moment of your time if you allow yourself to be fully present in the moment that you are in.
