Locals React to Kasich's Education Budget

DAYTON Its an announcement local educators and parents have been waiting for, Governor Kasichs plans to overhaul school funding. His proposal includes $1.2 billion dollars in new state funds over the next two years in an effort to level the playing field and spread money more evenly among poorer and wealthier school districts. Seventh grade teacher, Ella Jordan-Issac of Trotwood says years of cuts have already hurt teachers and students. We can no longer teach the middle, we have to teach individually because we live in the land of high stakes testing said Ella Jordan-Issac, Trotwood school teacher. Several teachers and parents werent happy about the governors closed meeting Thursday; they say he left key voices out of the conversation on the education budget. Its unfortunate he didnt involve all stakeholders including communities, including parents, including teachers in making these decisions, and unveiling his plans said David Rumick, Dayton Teachers Association. Governor Kasich did invite several superintendents to that close meeting, among them, Huber Heights Superintendent, Susan Gunnell. Gunnells district recently saw $6 million dollars in budget cuts in extracurricular activities and raised the cost of varsity sports, in some cases as much as $700 for students to play. My kids arent going to have the opportunity to have art and music programs and theyre shortening the school days and it puts more burdens on the parents said Marcia Streithorst, Huber Heights parent. Streithorst, a parent in Huber Heights, says she hopes the governor is listening to parents like her. It would be really nice if they could not cut the school day so much and if they can just find a way to bring back some of the programs they decided to cut said Streithorst. Kasichs plan also calls for no addition school funding cuts next year. Parents like Streithorst hopes thats really the case.
