ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- With prom season right around the corner, the Highway Patrol is working to reduce the number of teen traffic accidents.

They've kicked off a program called operation Drive to Live. Last year, the patrol investigated nearly 50,000 car crashes involving drivers and passengers between 15 and 19 years old. Those accidents resulted in 113 fatalities.

"What we're seeing as we investigate more accidents with teen drivers is they're just inexperienced and just not used to traveling in these types of vehicles," Trooper Kelly Rhodes said. "They just don't realize it takes time to slow this stuff down."

As part of the program troopers will be conducting traffic safety education programs at high schools across the state.
