A tale of goals and a wedding - that's what The FA Cup had in store for us at Roundwood Pavilion.

Parkgate, placed halfway up a hill with the town's steelworks towering in the background, had a certain charm about it as kick-off approached.

Home manager Steve Adams was coming up against his former assistant Julian Watts, now in charge of Shirebrook, and it was the protege who left smiling.

Despite a coachload of vocal away fans cheering them on, with a drummer in tow, the visitors started the slowest as Parkgate pushed for an early goal.

Scott Whittington forced a save from Joe McCormack on 10 minutes as his chipped effort looked to have caught the keeper offguard, but his strike was tipped around the post just in the nick of time.

This kicked Town into life, and they soon to found themselves in the lead. An inswinging free-kick was sent in from the left and Gavin King was able to nip in front of his man to glance a header inside the far post.

Things went from bad to worse for Parkgate 10 minutes later as King danced his way through the Steelemen defence from out on the left before seeing his drive blocked by the keeper, but Aaron Moxam was on hand to convert the rebound to make it two.

Despite the two-goal deficit at the break both Parkgate and Shirebrook joined together to show that love was well and truly in the air at the restart.

With a wedding reception taking place inside the club house, both teams agreed to show that the romance of The FA Cup is still alive as they formed a guard of honour to welcome the happy couple out on to the pitch.

The love-in did not continue for long, though, as the second half got underway.

Shirebrook seemed content with their lead, allowing Parkgate to keep possession within their own half and then picking them off on the break.

To be fair to the home side, they were fielding an almost entire new team after a summer of upheaval and it showed as they struggled to mount an attack of note.

Frustration was beginning to set in and it grew further as Shirebrook grabbed a third goal to seal the victory midway through the second half. Adam Shepherd provided the assist as King helped himself to his second goal of the game.
