San Francisco鈥檚 Chinatown and Downtown meet in one of the most visually distinctive parts of the city, where narrow historic streets and traditional Chinese businesses stand beside the towers of the Financial District. Chinatown developed during the 19th century and became one of the most important centers of Chinese-American life in the United States, surviving discriminatory policies, the 1906 earthquake and major rebuilding. Just beyond its decorated gateways, Downtown rises into a dense concentration of offices, hotels, shopping streets and skyscrapers, creating a striking transition between two very different layers of San Francisco鈥檚 urban history.
