Where longer heather meets a new burn or shorter heather can often be described as Edge Territory. Shorter managed heather is required to create open spaces for mammals and birds to feed. By removing longer heather through burning fresh shoots from Bilberry, heather and moss quickly grow. Edge Territory is required to allow cover in longer heather for protection and nesting whilst shorter heather provides food.
