(30 Nov 2018) CHAKA KHAN, TOMMY HILFIGER CELEBRATE COACH Known over the decades for its leather goods and iconic handbags, Coach and creative director Stuart Vevers were honored with a leadership award on Thursday (29 NOV. 2018) at the Lincoln Memorial Center. What started as a Manhattan family affair has flown into the realm of high fashion with Vevers' help. "What's fantastic about Coach is that it's a credible brand, an American brand, born here in New York. And then what's also great about it is the fact that it stands for inclusivity, it stands for fun, it stands for that desirability which everybody can achieve and enjoy," said Editor-in-Chief of Harper's Bazaar Glenda Bailey, who presented Vevers with his award. "I think it is that inclusiveness that's really in its DNA which makes it truly special." Designer Tommy Hilfiger agreed saying, "I think they've done an amazing job and I think Stuart is very talented." He added that Vevers' Coach designs were "classics with an authentic leather edge." The evening also served to raise funds for the arts, a platform that Chaka Khan, who performed at the event, was happy to support. "Well it's just important to support the arts. Period. You know, this is one place where the two art forms come together in a good way. I think in a cool way." The singer was decked out in an all-black fringed leather Coach ensemble and said she was happy to be there supporting Vevers and the Coach family. "It's really nice stuff," she said. "I'm really happy, pleased to be here." Vevers maintained that though he was from England, the New-York-based brand retains its identity. "It's about America," he said. "I have so much respect for the heritage of Coach. You know, there's not many brands that can boast 77 years of history in the U.S. So I have so much respect for that, but what I have to do is to look to the future and to look to what the next generation cares about. So it's really important that I do that."
