United Nations, New York, 12 October 2009 - Kai Eide, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan, yesterday spoke to the press about the country's difficult elections process, which, he said, has been marred by widespread fraud. He stressed the importance of continuing the process of installing democracy in Afghanistan. Eide noted that the staff of the UN Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA ) made great efforts and took great risks to collect information on Election Day. At the same time, he said, the quality of much of the information that was collected had variable reliability and often could not be verified. He underscored that all Afghans should be given the chance to vote, and the valid votes cast by them, at considerable risk sometimes, should be counted.
