(11 Oct 2018) Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN) have reaffirmed their commitment to open trading systems that have underpinned their economic growth. The leaders met Thursday in Bali, Indonesia, on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the IMF and World Bank. Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, said the group would redouble efforts to reach a "substantial conclusion" on a regional trade arrangement, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, by the year's end. That initiative, dubbed RCEP, includes China, India and Japan, but not the United States. Indonesian President Joko Widodo, said the group, which includes wealthy Singapore and less affluent economies like Myanmar and Laos, also was determined to close gaps in development within ASEAN. He said, "This is important, to make sure that no one is left behind."
