CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Cincinnati Police are looking for someone who killed a woman downtown just after midnight on Thursday. It happened in an alley on the western edge of downtown. Pendery Alley runs between Court and Race Streets. It’s a block or so from the Kroger building. Thursday morning, just after midnight, police were called to that location and found a body in the alley, who was later identified as 47-year-old Tracy Hawes. Law enforcement sources say that Hawes was apparently beaten with a blunt object. A couple of nearby residents who called 911 said that they heard loud screaming. The Court Street area has seen significant improvement in recent years with the addition of new bars and restaurants, but there are still empty buildings and vacant lots. Asked if they were concerned something like this will scare developers and residents away, Court Street resident and building owner Peter Howe said: “I don't think it will necessarily scare anyone off. I think that the most important thing is getting the neighbors together with law enforcement and city hall. We need assistance, people like me can come down and rehab a building. Is that going to stop the heroin addict from shooting up outside my window? Not necessarily.” There are some security cameras on buildings in the area and if the cameras were working Thursday night, perhaps what they captured will lead to whomever did this being captured as well. Court Street resident Peter Howe would like to see more lights in the alleys instead of the flashing lights from police cars after a homicide. At this point, there are no suspects. If you can help police catch the killer, call crime stoppers at 513-352-3040. You could be eligible for a cash reward if your tip leads to an arrest.
